Abstract

The ongoing digital transformation of news media practices generates new interfaces between technology and intricate journalistic processes. Stenbom’s presentation of her recent study at Aftonbladet offers a practical illustration of an attempt to utilise machine learning to generate search engine optimised headlines in a major Swedish newsroom. By using its technical results as a springboard for reflections among internal stakeholders, the experiment served as a catalysing innovation revealing deliberations on computational approaches in journalism. The research is part of a doctoral project exploring how legacy news organisations explore and collaborate with AI technologies, all with the aim of contributing to the longevity of the journalism field and the editorial mission it serves.

Agnes Stenbom is the Responsible Data & AI Specialist at the Nordic media group Schibsted, and an Industrial Phd Candidate at the Royal Institute of Technology.
