Abstract
Generative AI systems are trained on vast datasets that include copyright-protected works, raising complex legal and ethical questions: is large-scale text and data mining a legitimate exception or an infringement on a massive scale? And when AI produces creative output, who, if anyone, qualifies as the author?
This session examines the copyright challenges at both ends of the AI pipeline - from the legality of training on protected material to the uncertain status of AI-generated works under evolving U.S. and EU law.
